What Are CCRIS & CTOS?
CCRIS (Central Credit Reference Information System)
CCRIS is the central credit information system managed by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). It records ALL your loan and credit information from banks and financial institutions.
- What Is Recorded:**
- ✅ All loans (housing, car, personal, education)
- ✅ Credit cards (limit & outstanding balance)
- ✅ Payment records (ontime / late)
- ✅ Loan status (active / settled / defaulted)
- ✅ Total outstanding debt
- ✅ DSR (Debt Service Ratio)
CTOS (Credit Tip-Off Service)
CTOS is a private company that provides a more comprehensive credit report, including information not just from banks, but also:
- What Is Recorded:**
- ✅ All CCRIS info
- ✅ Company directorships
- ✅ Court cases/summons
- ✅ Bounced cheques
- ✅ Employment records
- ✅ Trade references
- ✅ CCRIS + additional information
- Simple Difference:**
- CCRIS** = BANK data only (managed by BNM)
- CTOS** = BANK + NON-BANK data (private company)
For a more detailed comparison, read CTOS vs CCRIS: the differences and which matters more.
Why Do CCRIS/CTOS Matter?
Every Bank/Lender Will Check!
When You Apply For A Loan: 1. The bank/lender asks for permission to check your CCRIS/CTOS 2. They download your report 3. They analyze your payment record & debt 4. DECIDE: Approve / Reject
Impact On Your Application:
| CCRIS Status | Approval Likelihood | Interest Rate | |---|---|---| | GREEN (Excellent) | 90-95% | Lowest (3-8%) | | YELLOW (Good) | 70-80% | Moderate (8-12%) | | RED (Poor) | 20-30% | High (12-18%) | | BLACK (Very Poor) | < 10% | Highest / Reject |

How To Improve Your CCRIS Score
For a more detailed action plan, follow our guide on how to raise your CCRIS score from 500 to 700.
Step 1: Pay ALL Bills On Time (Most Important!)
- Starting NOW:**
- Set a calendar reminder 3 days before the due date
- Or better: set up auto-debit
- ZERO EXCUSE for being late
- Why It Matters:**
- One ontime payment = a "0" for that month in CCRIS
- 6 consecutive months ontime = CCRIS yellow → green!
- 12 months ontime = perfect record!
Tips: 1. Set auto-debit for fixed loans (housing, car) 2. Set a reminder for credit cards (pay the FULL amount, not the minimum!) 3. Pay 3 days early (buffer for bank processing)
Step 2: Settle Overdue Accounts
If You Have Outstanding Debt:
Priority order: 1. 90+ days default - SETTLE THIS FIRST! (most dangerous) 2. 30-90 days overdue - Settle as soon as possible 3. Under 30 days overdue - Pay immediately
- How To Settle:**
- Call the bank, ask for the settlement amount
- Negotiate if needed (sometimes you get a discount!)
- Pay the full settlement
- Request a settlement letter
- Confirm it in CCRIS (updates in 1-2 months)
Note: Even after settling, the late record still stays in CCRIS for 12 months. But the status changes from "DOUBTFUL" to "SETTLED" (better!)
Step 3: Lower Your Credit Utilization
Credit Utilization = What % of your credit card you're using
Formula: (Balance ÷ Limit) × 100
- Example:**
- Limit: RM10,000
- Balance: RM7,000
- Utilization: 70% ❌ (TOO HIGH!)
- Target:**
- ✅ < 30% = EXCELLENT
- ⚠️ 30-50% = OKAY
- ❌ > 50% = DANGEROUS (looks desperate)
How To Lower It: 1. Pay more than the minimum payment 2. Pay twice a month (mid-month + end-month) 3. Request a credit limit increase (utilization % auto-drops) 4. Spread spending across other cards
Step 4: Don't Close Old Accounts
MISTAKE Many People Make: "I've settled my credit card, so I'll close the account!"
- DON'T!** Why?
- An old credit card = a long-standing relationship with the bank
- Shows you're responsible long-term
- Closing the account = losing your credit history
- Better:**
- Keep the account active
- Use it a little each month (RM50-100)
- Pay it FULL every month
- Build a perfect payment history
Step 5: Don't Apply For Too Many Loans
- Every Time You Apply For A Loan:**
- The bank runs a "hard inquiry" on your CCRIS
- Too many inquiries (> 3 in 6 months) = Red flag!
- The bank thinks you're desperate/in financial trouble
- Best Practice:**
- Research first before applying
- Apply to 1-2 places only (the ones you're most confident about)
- Space out applications (minimum 3-6 month gap)
Timeline: How Long Does It Take To Improve CCRIS?
Scenario 1: CCRIS Red → Yellow (6-12 Months)
If You Have 1-2 Late Payments:
- Month 0 (Now):**
- Download CCRIS
- Settle all overdue accounts
- Set up auto-debit
- Month 1-6:**
- Pay ontime EVERY month
- Old "1" or "2" codes still show in the 12-month history
- Month 7-12:**
- Old late payments have "rolled off" the 12-month window
- Recent 12 months are all "0 0 0 0..."
- CCRIS becomes YELLOW / GREEN!** ✅
Scenario 2: CCRIS Black → Red (12-24 Months)
If You Have A Default (6 6 6...):
- Month 0:**
- Settle the default account ASAP
- Negotiate with the bank to remove the "LOSS" status
- Month 1-12:**
- Pay ontime for all active accounts
- The default record is still there but status becomes "SETTLED"
- Month 13-24:**
- 12 months of good payment history
- The default record is now 12+ months old (less impact)
- Banks start to consider your application again
- CCRIS improves to RED / YELLOW**
- Month 24+:**
- The defaulted account drops off CCRIS (24 months after being settled)
- CCRIS CLEAN!** ✅
Common CCRIS Mistakes & Myths
Myth 1: "CCRIS can be cleared by paying a certain company"
FACT: ❌ SCAM! No one can "delete" or "clear" CCRIS except Bank Negara Malaysia. CCRIS is a factual record - if you were late, it will stay recorded for 12 months.
The only way: Pay ontime + wait it out.
Myth 2: "Checking CCRIS many times will damage your score"
FACT: ✅ Self-checks on the BNM portal do NOT affect your score. Only a "hard inquiry" by a bank when you apply for a loan has any impact (and even that is minimal).
Myth 3: "Settle the debt and CCRIS is instantly clean"
FACT: ❌ Settling the debt only changes the status from "DOUBTFUL" to "SETTLED". The late payment history still stays for 12 months. You need to wait for the history to "age out".
Myth 4: "CCRIS is the same as CTOS"
FACT: ❌ CCRIS (BNM) covers bank data only. CTOS (private) has extra information: court cases, bounced cheques, directorships, etc. CTOS is more detailed.
Myth 5: "After bankruptcy discharge, CCRIS is instantly clean"
FACT: ❌ After being discharged from bankruptcy, the record STAYS in CCRIS for 5 years. But the status becomes "DISCHARGED BANKRUPT" (better than "UNDISCHARGED").
Tips To Keep CCRIS Green FOREVER
1. Mindset: CCRIS Is Your Financial Resume
- The recruiter (bank) looks at your resume (CCRIS)
- Good resume = you get the interview (loan approval)
- Bad resume = rejected outright
So take care of your CCRIS like you take care of your resume - seriously!
2. Set Up Financial Automation
- Automate EVERYTHING you can:**
- ✅ Housing loan - Auto-debit
- ✅ Car loan - Auto-debit
- ✅ Personal loan - Auto-debit
- ✅ Utilities (electric, water) - Auto-debit
- ⚠️ Credit card - Set a reminder (pay the FULL amount!)
Why: Removes the excuse of "forgot to pay".
3. Review CCRIS Every 6 Months
- Set a calendar:**
- January: Download CCRIS
- July: Download CCRIS
- Check for:**
- ❓ Accounts you don't recognize (fraud?)
- ❓ Is the payment history correct?
- ❓ Are all statuses "PERFORMING"?
- ❓ Is there improvement?
If you find an error: Report it immediately to the bank & BNM.
4. Build An Emergency Fund
Target: 6 months of expenses
Why: During an emergency (job loss, medical), you can still pay your loans and keep CCRIS green.
No emergency fund = the first thing cut is the loan payment = CCRIS turns red ❌
5. Don't Be A "Maximum Usage" Person
- Bad habit:**
- Limit RM10,000 → Use RM9,999
- Salary RM5,000 → Loan payment RM3,000 (60%!)
- No buffer, no safety margin
- Better:**
- Credit utilization < 30%
- Loan payment < 40% of salary
- Keep extra for emergencies
Conclusion
- ✅ Whether you can get a loan
- ✅ What interest rate you'll get
- ✅ What credit card limit you'll get
- ✅ Even job applications (some companies check!)
Good news: You are FULLY in control!
3 Golden Rules: 1. Pay ontime - 100%, no excuses 2. Don't overcommit - Borrow responsibly 3. Review regularly - Check every 6 months
One late payment can affect your loan application for 12 months. But 12 months of good payments can transform your CCRIS from red to green!
